How it Started...

Growing up in an Italian kitchen, I learned early on that food is so much more than nourishment. It’s culture, history, connection, and yes, it’s pleasure. I knew food could be a cultural symbol of love and connection. Now, I understand it as a biological signal capable of shaping our genetic expression for the better.

We all experience moments capable of altering our entire life’s journey. For me, it was losing my father at the age of fourteen. I realized then how deeply our health decisions mattered, and his passing fueled my desire to understand the science behind well-being.

But as much as my father’s memory inspired my scientific journey, my mother played an equally powerful role in shaping the person I’ve become. My mother represents both my vulnerability—because my love for her is my tender point—and my resilience. We all have moments where we wish our parents could’ve been stronger. This happened to me after my father died. But, while I had wished for a strong mother, her unwavering, persistent love gave me the foundation to build my own strength.

Curiosity

& Epigenetics

The distinct but separate influences from my parents coincided with a pivotal moment in scientific history – the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2000. As the world celebrated this breakthrough in understanding human DNA, I felt as if a new chapter was unfolding for me. Genetics were no longer abstract. They became more tangible tools for understanding health and longevity. A lifelong lover of literature, I shifted my focus from philosophy to science.

This revelation set me on a path to Stanford University, where I helped shape the school’s first program in epigenetics – a growing field that proves our daily choices reshape how our genes are read and expressed. From the food we eat, to the way we move.

The fusion of humanities and science
became my mission

and my signature approach.

PHILOSOPHY

How simple pleasures (well-made healthy meals, conversations with friends, movement that feels good) enrich our lives.

SCIENCE

The provable lifestyle factors that can actually outsmart our genes and shape our lives. (Epigenetics).

My work in epigenetics proved a powerful idea: our genes are not set in stone. We hold the pencil of life to rewrite the story of our DNA.

Nowhere is this idea more evident than with my mother; an ongoing source of resilience and vulnerability for me. As she grows older, she’s become a positive image of healthy aging—a theme central to my work. At 84, she embodies true beauty and health. Unlike the complicated routines of many biohackers, she shows the power of a positive attitude and the joy of good pleasures: dressing elegantly, cooking a well-presented meal, sipping a glass of wine, and savoring life’s beauty. She is my living reminder that longevity is so much more than science—it’s about embracing the art of living.

Over 17 years of research, I’ve seen the remarkable impact of lifestyle on our biology, and my work has been featured on Netflix, TEDx, and in top scientific journals. Today, I help others discover the power of epigenetics so they can take control of their own health stories. My work is inspired by my father’s memory, fueled by a lifelong love of learning, and anchored in a philosophy that finds beauty in complexity.

My philosophy is firmly rooted in the idea that science should be warm and beautiful and that life should be pleasurable.
